BBVA Leverages ChatGPT Enterprise to Transform Banking Workflows
Spanish banking giant BBVA has announced the integration of ChatGPT Enterprise into its core operational workflows, aiming to significantly improve risk analysis, customer service, and internal processes within the financial sector.
Unlike many organizations where adopting generative AI is the primary challenge, BBVA focuses on maximizing value extraction from the technology. By embedding OpenAI’s advanced platform directly into its operational infrastructure, the bank is set to deploy AI tools across all its units, representing one of the most extensive enterprise-level AI implementations in banking to date.
Phased Rollout Demonstrates Tangible Productivity Gains
BBVA began collaborating with OpenAI in May 2024, initially rolling out 3,300 ChatGPT Enterprise accounts to validate practical use cases. This pilot phase enabled the bank to assess AI’s impact on daily operations before expanding deployment to approximately 11,000 employees.
The results have been promising: employees reported saving nearly three hours per week on routine tasks, while engagement remained high, with over 80% of users accessing the platform daily. Furthermore, staff members developed thousands of customized GPTs tailored to specific collaborative and administrative functions, highlighting the innovative potential of bottom-up AI adoption.
Enhancing Risk Management and Software Development
BBVA’s partnership with OpenAI extends beyond productivity enhancements. A core objective is to streamline resource-intensive risk analysis processes, which are critical in the heavily regulated banking industry. Additionally, the integration aims to improve software development workflows and bolster overall employee support mechanisms.
Carlos Torres Vila, Chairman of BBVA, emphasized the bank’s ambition: “We were pioneers in digital and mobile transformation, and now we enter the AI era with even greater ambition. Our alliance with OpenAI accelerates the native integration of artificial intelligence across the bank to create a smarter, more proactive, and personalized banking experience that anticipates each client’s needs.”
Robust Security and Staff Training to Ensure Compliance
Given the stringent regulatory environment, BBVA has implemented enterprise-grade security and privacy controls to protect client data while enabling staff to utilize OpenAI’s models safely. The deployment includes secure internal AI agents that integrate seamlessly with existing banking systems.
To facilitate effective use, BBVA and OpenAI are collaborating on structured adoption frameworks and specialized training programs, addressing the critical need for employee skills development to maximize AI benefits.
Improving Customer Experience Through AI
BBVA has also introduced ‘Blue,’ a virtual assistant powered by OpenAI’s technology, designed to help customers manage cards and accounts via natural language interactions. Future plans include deeper integration of ChatGPT-based products to enable direct, conversational banking experiences for clients.
To accelerate this AI transformation, BBVA maintains a dedicated team working closely with OpenAI’s product and research units, positioning the bank as an AI-native institution.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, commented: “BBVA exemplifies how a major financial institution can adopt AI with speed and real ambition. Through our expanded partnership, BBVA will embed AI deeply into their products and operations, elevating the banking experience for their customers.”
