OpenAI has rolled out a new group chat feature within ChatGPT, enabling users to invite up to 20 participants into a single interactive conversation with the AI. Previously designed primarily for individual use, ChatGPT now supports small-group collaboration, broadening its utility across both casual and professional settings.

The group chat functionality became widely accessible to all logged-in users following a brief pilot phase earlier in the month. Users initiate a group chat by clicking the “people” icon in the ChatGPT interface, which duplicates their current conversation into a shared space. Upon joining, users are prompted to set a display name, username, and profile photo to ease participant identification within the conversation. ChatGPT is designed to seamlessly integrate into the dialogue, discerning when to contribute or remain silent. Direct AI input can be solicited by mentioning “ChatGPT” in messages. The AI also supports emoji reactions and utilizes profile photos when generating personalized visual content.
