Amazon Expands Shopping Assistant Retailers is at the center of this update. Amazon introduces its AI-powered shopping assistant technology to other retailers via AWS, with Kate Spade among the first to implement the new service tailored for personalized gift shopping experiences.
Amazon Launches AI Shopping Assistant Platform for Retailers
Amazon is extending its advanced AI shopping technology beyond its own marketplace by offering a new service called the Agentic Shopping Assistant, built on Amazon Web Services (AWS). This move enables other retailers to create customized AI shopping assistants for their websites and apps, enhancing the customer shopping experience through conversational interfaces.
The platform is designed to be highly adaptable, allowing retailers to tailor the assistant according to their product catalogues, target customer segments, shopping contexts, and unique brand voices.
Technology Rooted in Amazon’s Own Innovations
The AI shopping assistant technology is derived from Amazon’s internally developed systems, including Alexa for Shopping. Amazon has repackaged its architecture, starter code, and operational insights to support external retailers in deploying their own conversational shopping agents.
According to Amazon, over 300 million customers engaged with its AI shopping assistant in the past year, contributing to nearly US$12 billion in incremental sales. The company highlights that retailers can launch these AI agents within weeks, a significant acceleration compared to the typical years-long development process when building from scratch.
Support and Resources for Retailers
The service package includes architectural guidance, starter code, and expert assistance from AWS professionals and system integrator partners, ensuring smooth implementation and integration into existing retail platforms.
Kate Spade Debuts AI Gift Concierge
Kate Spade, a brand under the Tapestry group, is among the first to adopt Amazon’s AI shopping assistant technology. They introduced an AI Gift Concierge designed specifically to aid customers in selecting gifts through an interactive conversational interface. This assistant focuses on alleviating the common stress associated with gift shopping, a challenge highlighted by Amazon’s data showing that 53% of shoppers report feeling stressed during gift purchases.
The assistant recommends gift ideas based on occasions and user preferences, aiming to provide a personalized and stress-free shopping journey. Fabio Luzzi, Chief Data and Analytics Officer at Tapestry, emphasized that the development of this tool was driven by listening to consumer needs and enhancing the gift-buying experience. Kate Spade conducted a testing phase lasting approximately two and a half months before rolling out the assistant to the public.
Underlying AWS Technologies
The AI shopping assistant leverages several AWS services, including Amazon Bedrock, AgentCore, and OpenSearch. Bedrock serves as the foundation for generative AI applications, AgentCore manages AI agents, and OpenSearch handles search and retrieval functions.
Amazon reports that conversational shopping sessions facilitated by this technology achieve conversion rates 3.5 times higher than traditional keyword-based product searches, demonstrating the effectiveness of AI-driven interaction in e-commerce.
Context Within Amazon’s AI Ecosystem
This new offering follows Amazon’s May launch of Alexa for Shopping in the United States, which allows users to type shopping-related queries and receive conversational responses. Alexa for Shopping integrates components from Rufus and Alexa+, previous AI shopping assistants developed by Amazon earlier in 2024.
By opening its AI shopping assistant technology to other retailers, Amazon is not only enhancing the retail experience industry-wide but also reinforcing its leadership in AI-driven commerce solutions.
