Salesforce announced the release of a completely rebuilt version of Slackbot, its AI-powered workplace assistant, which now goes beyond simple notifications to perform complex tasks such as searching enterprise data, drafting documents, and executing actions on behalf of employees.
The revamped Slackbot is available to Salesforce’s Business+ and Enterprise+ customers and represents the company’s most assertive effort to position Slack at the forefront of the “agentic AI” movement—where software agents collaborate with humans to handle multifaceted work activities. This launch underscores Salesforce’s commitment to demonstrating that artificial intelligence will enhance rather than replace its core products.
From Basic Notifications to Advanced AI Assistance
According to Parker Harris, Salesforce co-founder and Slack CTO, the new Slackbot is a major upgrade from its original version. He likened the previous Slackbot to a “tricycle” and the new iteration to a “Porsche,” emphasizing the leap in capability.
The original Slackbot handled straightforward algorithmic functions like reminders and notifications. In contrast, the new Slackbot is built on a large language model (LLM) combined with advanced search technologies capable of accessing Salesforce records, Google Drive files, calendar data, and extensive Slack conversations, enabling it to synthesize information and assist in decision-making.
Powered by Anthropic’s Claude with Plans for Expanded AI Models
The new Slackbot operates on Anthropic’s Claude LLM, chosen largely due to compliance needs, including FedRAMP Moderate certification, which supports U.S. federal government clients. Harris noted that Anthropic was the only provider able to meet these requirements at the development stage.
However, Salesforce plans to incorporate additional AI providers later this year, including Google’s Gemini and potentially OpenAI’s models, reflecting CEO Marc Benioff’s view that large language models are becoming standardized utilities akin to CPUs.
Internal Adoption and Impact at Salesforce
Salesforce conducted an extensive internal trial involving its 80,000 employees, with remarkable engagement. Two-thirds of employees tested the new Slackbot, and of those, 80% used it regularly, reporting weekly time savings ranging from two to 20 hours. Satisfaction rates hit 96%, the highest for any AI feature introduced by Slack.
The adoption was primarily organic, driven by employees sharing effective prompts and use cases, demonstrating a collaborative learning culture within Salesforce.
Transforming Enterprise Data into Actionable Insights
Slackbot’s capability to integrate and synthesize data from multiple sources was showcased in a demonstration where it analyzed customer feedback, correlated it with usage data, identified potential accounts for pilot access, and organized these insights into Slack’s collaborative Canvas format—all while coordinating scheduling for follow-up meetings.
Customer Experiences Highlight Productivity Gains
Among the pilot customers is Beast Industries, the company behind YouTube personality MrBeast. CIO Luis Madrigal praised the easy deployment and robust security features, emphasizing that Slackbot accesses only data that individual users are authorized to view. Employees reported saving at least 90 minutes daily, describing Slackbot as an attentive assistant.
Other clients, including Slalom, reMarkable, Xero, Mercari, and Engine, also reported significant productivity improvements, citing Slackbot’s ability to reduce context switching and streamline workflows.
Competitive Landscape: Slackbot Versus Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini
Salesforce positions Slackbot as a uniquely contextual and convenient AI assistant embedded directly within Slack, differentiating it from Microsoft’s Copilot and Google’s Gemini, which integrate with other software suites.
Executives stress Slackbot’s advantage lies in its in-depth understanding of users’ work context without requiring additional setup, allowing it to deliver personalized support seamlessly within the platform employees already use daily.
Vision for a Unified AI Ecosystem
Salesforce envisions Slackbot as a “super agent” that will eventually coordinate with other AI agents across organizations, serving as a central hub for enterprise AI collaboration. This vision aligns with recent developments, such as Anthropic’s Claude Code for Slack and other third-party AI agents integrating into the platform.
While multi-agent coordination remains in early stages, Salesforce anticipates gradual progress toward more sophisticated AI collaboration by 2026, focusing on customer success rather than premature hype.
Pricing and Potential Cost Considerations
Slackbot is included at no extra charge for Business+ and Enterprise+ plan subscribers. However, some enterprise customers might face increased costs due to Salesforce’s evolving data access pricing, which could affect third-party applications and integrations.
Current Capabilities and Future Developments
The rollout of the new Slackbot is underway, with full availability expected by the end of February and mobile support by early March. Some features like meeting booking and image generation are forthcoming, highlighting ongoing enhancements to the assistant’s functionality.
Salesforce has not disclosed plans for integration with competitive CRM platforms but acknowledges the importance of such capabilities in the competitive landscape.
The Future of Work: Conversational AI as the Interface
Salesforce’s strategy bets on the increasing preference for conversational AI as the primary interface for workplace productivity. Harris emphasized that large language models unlock unprecedented value from unstructured data within Slack, enabling employees to derive meaningful insights without manual searching.
Looking ahead, Salesforce expects AI interfaces to evolve beyond conversation, generating tailored user experiences that best fit individual intents.
The broader enterprise AI race involves major players like Microsoft and Google, each aiming to embed AI deeply into existing work tools rather than creating standalone applications.
Following a challenging year and concerns about AI’s impact on its business, Salesforce is confident that Slackbot will prove AI to be an asset, leveraging Slack’s vast user base as a strategic advantage.
Salesforce account executive Haley Gault captured the sentiment succinctly: “I honestly can’t imagine working for another company not having access to these types of tools. This is just how I work now.” This reflects the company’s vision for the future of AI-enhanced work.
