With data coming from diverse sources and outcomes varying in real time, AI agents offer the adaptability needed for these dynamic scenarios.
AI Agents Versus Traditional RPA: A New Paradigm
Brian Halpin, Managing Director of Automation at SS&C Blue Prism, illustrates the difference using the example of analyzing a credit agreement requiring numerous nuanced answers rather than simple data points. Large language models (LLMs) embedded in AI agents bring reasoning capabilities that enable a deeper understanding of such documents.
Halpin highlights that current AI agents are given goals such as “review this loan” or “onboard this customer” without being provided step-by-step instructions. This marks a shift from deterministic processes to more autonomous, outcome-focused workflows.
Challenges on the Path to Full Autonomy
Despite the potential, Halpin acknowledges that the market is not yet ready for fully autonomous AI-driven workflows due to concerns around trust, regulatory compliance, auditability, stability, and security. Issues like AI hallucinations, model drift, and variability in responses when models update pose significant risks that organizations must manage carefully.
“There’s an awful lot of learning to happen before companies fully embrace agentic workflows,” Halpin states, underlining the ongoing nature of this technological journey.
Integrating AI Agents with Existing Automation Efforts
SS&C Blue Prism serves thousands of customers with existing RPA implementations, ranging from Centers of Excellence to operational digital workers. The company aims to help these clients incorporate AI agents to achieve higher levels of automation efficiency.
Halpin notes that AI adoption is often siloed within organizations, with AI teams separated from process automation groups. SS&C Blue Prism’s goal is to blend these capabilities to unlock an additional 20-30% automation in end-to-end processes by embedding AI directly into workflow orchestration.
New Technologies and Industry Leadership
The company is preparing to launch new solutions that enable organizations to build, embed, and orchestrate AI agents within their workflows seamlessly. Attendees of the recent TechEx Global Intelligent Automation conference received insights into SS&C Blue Prism’s roadmap and successes.
SS&C Technologies itself is a major RPA user, operating over 3,500 digital workers and realizing hundreds of millions in operational savings. They currently deploy around 35 AI agents performing complex tasks alongside these digital workers, exemplifying the practical benefits of agentic automation.
