Microsoft Expands Cloud Services to Boost Indonesia’s AI Development Ambitions

Indonesia is intensifying its efforts toward AI-led economic growth as more local companies and institutions seek to develop AI applications, upgrade legacy systems, and improve data governance. Microsoft has responded to this momentum by expanding the range of cloud and AI services available in the Indonesia Central cloud region, which launched six months ago. This expansion enables businesses, government agencies, and developers to run AI workloads domestically rather than relying on overseas data centers.

The announcement was made at the Cloud & AI Innovation Summit in Jakarta, gathering industry and government leaders to explore strategies for advancing AI adoption nationwide. Key speakers included Mike Chan, head of Azure AI Apps & Agents in Asia, and Dharma Simorangkir, President Director of Microsoft Indonesia, who emphasized that building local AI capabilities must translate into practical innovation.

Transitioning from AI Experiments to Core Integration

Many Indonesian enterprises are moving beyond initial AI experiments, now designing solutions tailored to their specific operational challenges. Microsoft categorizes these organizations as Frontier Firms—those that embed AI deeply into their workflows to enhance customer experiences, streamline internal processes, and modernize outdated systems.

To support this progression, the Indonesia Central cloud region now offers a broad suite of Azure services, including data-connected application development tools, structured data management, and AI-optimized virtual machines capable of training and deploying sophisticated models. These high-performance computing resources allow companies to process sensitive data locally while handling complex AI tasks.

Additionally, Microsoft 365 Copilot is now available in the region, integrating AI capabilities into widely used productivity applications. Developers benefit from GitHub Copilot, an AI-powered coding assistant that accelerates software creation. Together, these services form a cohesive platform that enables organizations to scale AI from pilot projects to production environments with greater reliability and cost efficiency.

Early Adoption by Indonesian Enterprises

Since launching in May 2025, the Indonesia Central region has seen growing demand from sectors such as mining, travel, and digital services. Companies like Petrosea and Vale Indonesia utilize the local cloud infrastructure to modernize technical systems and comply with stringent data residency requirements.

Digital-native companies are also leveraging AI more directly. For example, tiket.com developed an AI-powered travel assistant using the Azure OpenAI Service that allows customers to interact in natural language, facilitating flight inquiries and post-booking service additions. Irvan Bastian Arief, Vice President of Technology GRAND, Data & AI at tiket.com, stated, “Our advancements in artificial intelligence are designed to deliver the best possible experience for our customers,” highlighting conversational AI’s role in simplifying travel planning and reducing customer support friction.

Unified Data Management for Scalable AI

A prominent theme at the summit was the critical need for effective data management as a foundation for scaling AI. Microsoft introduced Microsoft Fabric to the Indonesian market, a unified environment integrating data engineering, integration, warehousing, analytics, and business intelligence.

Microsoft Fabric incorporates AI-powered Copilot features that assist teams in preparing data and generating insights without juggling multiple disparate tools. Since many organizations’ data is fragmented across internal systems and various cloud platforms, Fabric offers a consolidated solution that improves governance, accelerates reporting, and controls costs, enabling teams to build structured data foundations efficiently.

Empowering Indonesia’s Workforce with AI Skills

Beyond infrastructure, Microsoft emphasized workforce development through its Microsoft Elevate AI training program, now in its second year. This initiative has reached over 1.2 million learners and aims to certify 500,000 individuals in AI competencies by 2026. The upcoming phase will focus on practical application, encouraging participants to leverage AI tools in real-world scenarios rather than solely theoretical learning.

The program targets a diverse audience, including educators, nonprofit workers, community leaders, and digital skill seekers. Training utilizes various resources such as Microsoft Copilot, Learning Accelerator, Minecraft Education, and tailored modules demonstrating AI’s support for practical tasks.

Dharma Simorangkir commented that cloud and AI technologies “are the backbone of national competitiveness” and underscored that infrastructure investments are meaningful only if accompanied by skilled human capital prepared to utilize them effectively.

Long-Term Commitment to Indonesia’s AI Ecosystem

Microsoft’s efforts align with a broader pledge of US$1.7 billion to Indonesia between 2024 and 2028, covering infrastructure expansion, partner ecosystem development, and talent cultivation. The company is also set to host GitHub Universe Jakarta on December 3, 2025, a developer-centric event aimed at fostering collaboration among software engineers, startups, and researchers.

Indonesia aspires to establish itself as a regional hub for secure and inclusive AI innovation. With the expanded local cloud region, enriched AI tools, and a growing emphasis on workforce readiness, the country is laying the groundwork for sustained digital transformation. Companies gain the ability to develop AI solutions closer to home, developers receive enhanced support, and workers access new opportunities to build relevant skills.

The next few years will be crucial in demonstrating how these initiatives come together to shift organizations from experimentation toward mature, long-term AI adoption.
