OpenAI has rolled out a new group chat feature within ChatGPT, enabling users to create shared conversations involving up to 20 participants. This innovation transforms ChatGPT from a primarily one-on-one interaction tool into a collaborative platform designed to support small teams working together.
Feature Overview and Functionality
Accessible to all logged-in users following a recent pilot phase, the group chat function allows individuals to initiate a shared chat by clicking the “people” icon in the ChatGPT app. The current conversation is duplicated into a new space where others can be invited via shareable links. This link-sharing mechanism permits additional participants to join, facilitating dynamic group engagement.
Upon joining, users are prompted to establish a group identity by setting a chat name, username, and profile photo, aiding in clear participant identification. The AI model, powered by GPT-5.1 Auto, is programmed to seamlessly integrate into conversations, discerning when to contribute or remain silent. Users can summon ChatGPT’s input explicitly by tagging it in messages. The AI can also react with emojis and generate personalized images using profile photos.
Control options include a settings panel allowing users to add or remove members, mute notifications, and input custom instructions for ChatGPT. Importantly, OpenAI emphasizes that group chats operate without retaining memories from individual personal chats, nor do they establish new memories from group interactions.
