OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Group Chats to Enhance AI Collaboration in Teams

OpenAI Introduces Group Chats in ChatGPT for Enhanced Team Collaboration

OpenAI has unveiled a new group chat feature within ChatGPT, enabling up to 20 users to participate in a shared conversation with the AI. This update marks a significant evolution of ChatGPT from a primarily one-on-one interaction tool to a platform supporting small group collaboration.

Feature Overview and Functionality

Available now to all logged-in users following a brief pilot phase, the group chat function allows users to initiate a shared conversation by clicking the “people” icon in the ChatGPT interface. The system duplicates the current chat and generates a sharable link to invite others, who can further distribute the link to expand the group.

Upon joining, each participant is prompted to set a display name, username, and profile picture, facilitating clear identification within the group. ChatGPT is designed to participate fluidly in the conversation, selectively responding or remaining silent as appropriate. Users can directly engage ChatGPT by mentioning its name in messages, prompting it to contribute. The AI can also react with emojis and incorporate profile photos when generating personalized images.

Users have access to a settings panel to add or remove participants, mute notifications, and provide customized instructions to tailor the AI’s behavior. Importantly, OpenAI has confirmed that ChatGPT does not retain memories from personal chats within group sessions nor create new memories based on group interactions, addressing privacy concerns.

Powered by GPT-5.1 Auto

The group chats operate on OpenAI’s GPT-5.1 Auto model, which dynamically selects the most suitable response engine based on the prompt and user options. This rollout coincides with recent releases of GPT-5.1 Instant and Thinking models, as well as OpenAI’s social video app, Sora.

Implications for Team Productivity and AI Integration

While OpenAI markets the feature as a tool for casual planning—such as organizing dinners or trips—the utility extends deeply into professional workflows. Teams can leverage group chats to consolidate brainstorming, research, and early project discussions into a single, coherent space.

  • Cross-Functional Alignment: Group chats help unify product, design, engineering, and marketing teams by centralizing early-stage ideas that often get lost across emails and various chat platforms. New participants can quickly catch up via AI-generated summaries and structured plans.
  • Streamlined Review Processes: Instead of juggling multiple feedback channels, team members can collaboratively review drafts within the group chat. ChatGPT aids by rewriting content, comparing versions, and clarifying comments, accelerating iteration cycles.
  • Accelerated Onboarding: New team members gain rapid context through ChatGPT’s summarization of prior discussions and highlighting of outstanding tasks, reducing onboarding time.
  • Efficient Task Coordination: Routine activities such as event planning or drafting communications benefit from ChatGPT’s ability to generate schedules, checklists, and message drafts, fostering smoother collaboration.
  • Organized Creative Feedback: By grouping and analyzing feedback, ChatGPT helps teams reconcile conflicting inputs and produce coherent drafts, minimizing rework.

Broader Context and Future Outlook

This group chat feature represents a notable shift in how AI tools like ChatGPT integrate into workplace collaboration. As companies increasingly adopt AI to augment workflows, providing a shared conversational space where humans and AI interact in tandem could redefine project management and communication.

Although not a replacement for human coordination, OpenAI’s group chats offer a unified interface to reduce fragmentation in communication and keep projects progressing efficiently.
