Siemens has introduced the Eigen Engineering Agent, a sophisticated artificial intelligence system aimed at transforming automation engineering by autonomously managing planning and validation tasks in operational settings.
Transforming Automation Engineering with AI
The Eigen Engineering Agent leverages multi-step reasoning and self-correction capabilities to perform complex engineering tasks without human intervention. Embedded directly within Siemens’ engineering platforms, the AI system supports end-to-end workflows — from initial design phases through to final validation.
Capabilities and Workflow Integration
The AI agent is engineered to interpret detailed project requirements, generate automation code, configure industrial devices, and iteratively refine outputs until they meet predefined performance benchmarks. Its capabilities span critical tasks such as programmable logic controller (PLC) programming, human-machine interface (HMI) setup, and device configuration, all while ensuring industrial-grade accuracy and reliability.
Integration with Siemens’ Totally Integrated Automation Engineering platform, known as TIA Portal, enables the agent to access project-specific data including system structures and component interdependencies. This connectivity allows the AI to produce results that align seamlessly with existing system configurations, even in legacy or undocumented environments, eliminating the need for manual data translation.
Iterative Problem Solving and Validation
The Eigen Engineering Agent approaches engineering challenges by decomposing them into sequential steps, processing each stage methodically, and continuously evaluating results against project criteria. This iterative process continues until the outputs satisfy all specifications before being submitted for human engineer review.
Addressing Industry Workforce Challenges
With industry reports forecasting a global shortage of up to seven million manufacturing workers by 2030, and a notable percentage of engineering positions remaining vacant, Siemens emphasizes that their AI system can complete tasks two to five times faster than traditional manual processes without compromising precision.
Real-World Deployment and Impact
During pilot programs involving over 100 companies across 19 countries, including firms such as ANDRITZ Metals, CASMT, and Prism Systems, the Eigen Engineering Agent was applied to routine automation engineering workflows. Prism Systems utilized the AI to generate and import structured control language (SCL) code, achieving significant reductions in execution time. CASMT implemented the system to automate device configuration, code generation, and HMI visualization, resulting in streamlined engineering hand-offs and accelerated project delivery.
Currently integrated within the TIA Portal platform, which boasts more than 600,000 users, the AI agent is accessible as part of Siemens’ Xcelerator portfolio, providing digital access for industrial customers.
Future Prospects and Industry Significance
Despite the abundance of operational data in manufacturing, challenges remain around data quality and contextualization, as well as a shortage of skilled personnel capable of managing AI systems in industrial contexts. Siemens plans to expand the AI agent’s role beyond automation engineering into other segments of the industrial value chain.
This initiative aligns with Siemens’ broader strategy to embed AI deeply into industrial operations and software ecosystems. The launch follows the company’s €1 billion investment in industrial AI, supported by a global team of more than 1,500 AI experts and over 2,000 AI-related patents, underscoring Siemens’ commitment to advancing AI-driven engineering solutions.
