Salesforce Unveils Advanced AI-Powered Slackbot to Compete with Microsoft and Google in Workplace AI

Salesforce announced the launch of a fully rebuilt version of Slackbot, its AI workplace assistant, on Tuesday. Unlike its predecessor, which offered simple reminders and notifications, the new Slackbot is a powerful AI agent designed to search enterprise data, draft documents, and execute tasks on behalf of employees.

The upgraded Slackbot is now available to customers on Slack’s Business+ and Enterprise+ plans. Salesforce aims to establish Slack as a pivotal player in the emerging “agentic AI” paradigm, where AI agents work alongside humans to handle complex activities. This initiative also seeks to reassure investors that AI will enhance Salesforce’s offerings rather than threaten its core business.

From Basic Tool to Advanced AI Agent

Parker Harris, Salesforce co-founder and Slack CTO, described the transformation metaphorically: “The old Slackbot was like a tricycle; the new Slackbot is like a Porsche.” The original Slackbot provided algorithmic functions such as reminders to add collaborators or archive channels. In contrast, the new version operates on a completely new architecture featuring a large language model (LLM) combined with a robust search engine. It can access a wide range of data sources including Salesforce records, Google Drive files, calendar information, and Slack conversation history.

Despite the comprehensive technical overhaul, Salesforce retained the Slackbot name to leverage brand familiarity.

Powered by Anthropic’s Claude with Plans for Expanded AI Model Support

The new Slackbot runs on Claude, a large language model developed by Anthropic. The selection was influenced by compliance requirements, particularly Slack’s FedRAMP Moderate certification to serve U.S. federal agencies. According to Harris, Anthropic was the only provider able to offer a compliant LLM at the project’s start.

Salesforce plans to integrate additional AI models this year, including Google’s Gemini and potentially OpenAI’s models. Harris emphasized the commoditization of LLMs, likening them to “CPUs” that are becoming standard infrastructure.

Salesforce also clarified it does not train AI models on customer data to maintain confidentiality and security.

Internal Testing Yields High Adoption and Productivity Gains

Salesforce conducted extensive internal testing of the new Slackbot with its 80,000 employees. Ryan Gavin, Slack’s Chief Marketing Officer, reported it as “the fastest adopted product in Salesforce history.” Two-thirds of employees tried Slackbot, with 80% continuing regular use and a satisfaction rate reaching 96%.

Users reported saving between two to 20 hours weekly. Adoption was driven primarily by organic social sharing rather than top-down mandates, with employees collaboratively sharing effective Slackbot prompts.

Transforming Enterprise Data into Actionable Insights

Slackbot’s capabilities include synthesizing data across multiple sources. In demonstrations, it analyzed customer feedback alongside usage dashboards, correlating qualitative and quantitative data. It can identify promising enterprise accounts for pilot programs, generate collaborative documents in Slack’s Canvas format, and schedule meetings by checking calendar availability.

Rob Seaman, Slack’s Chief Product Officer, highlighted that Slackbot is evolving to integrate with additional third-party tools, enhancing its utility as a collaborative assistant.

Real-World Impact: Slackbot Saves Time and Boosts Efficiency

Among early adopters is Beast Industries, the parent company of YouTube personality MrBeast. Luis Madrigal, Beast’s CIO, praised Slackbot’s easy deployment and strong security features, noting that it only accesses data users are authorized to see.

Employees at Beast Industries reported saving at least 90 minutes daily. Other pilot customers, including Slalom, reMarkable, and Xero, also noted significant productivity improvements, with one executive calling Slackbot a “chaos tamer” that reduces context switching.

Competing with Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini

Salesforce’s Slackbot now directly competes with Microsoft’s Copilot and Google’s Gemini, integrated into their respective productivity suites. Slack executives emphasize Slackbot’s advantage in context awareness and seamless integration within Slack, which requires no additional setup or training.

Harris described Slackbot as an “employee super agent,” deeply embedded in the user’s workflow and designed to be as beloved and indispensable as Slack itself.

Vision for a Unified AI Super Agent Ecosystem

Salesforce envisions Slackbot as a “super agent” capable of coordinating with other AI agents across organizations. Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and others have developed agents for Slack, signaling a future where humans and AI agents collaborate closely.

Harris anticipates that by fiscal year 2026, multi-agent coordination will become more common, though he cautions against overhyping the technology prematurely.

Pricing and Data Access Considerations

Slackbot is included at no extra cost for Business+ and Enterprise+ customers. However, some enterprises may face increased costs due to Salesforce’s evolving API pricing policies, which could affect third-party integrations and data access strategies.

Current Features and Future Roadmap

The rollout of the new Slackbot started immediately and will complete for all eligible customers by the end of February, with mobile availability expected by early March. While calendar reading and availability features are available at launch, meeting booking and image generation capabilities are slated for future updates.

Salesforce did not comment on integrations with competing CRM systems but acknowledged the strategic importance of such capabilities.

Salesforce is betting that conversational AI interfaces like Slackbot will define the future of enterprise work, enabling employees to interact with complex systems through natural language rather than traditional software navigation.

Harris highlighted the immense value of applying LLMs to unstructured enterprise data, enabling insights and efficiencies unattainable by humans manually.

Looking forward, Salesforce expects AI agents to develop interfaces that best suit user intent, moving beyond purely conversational interactions.

This launch places Salesforce alongside Microsoft, Google, and numerous startups in a race to embed AI seamlessly within existing workplace tools, aiming to become the invisible layer of workplace intelligence.

Following a challenging year on Wall Street and concerns about AI’s impact on its business, Salesforce is confident that Slackbot’s integration into daily workflows will demonstrate AI’s role as a productivity enhancer rather than a threat.

As Salesforce account executive Haley Gault expressed, “I honestly can’t imagine working for another company not having access to these types of tools. This is just how I work now.” This sentiment captures Salesforce’s optimistic vision for Slackbot’s transformative potential.
