Microsoft Strengthens AI Infrastructure in Indonesia

Indonesia is rapidly advancing its AI-driven growth strategy, supported by an expansion of Microsoft’s cloud and AI services in the Indonesia Central region. This development offers businesses, government agencies, and developers more options to run AI workloads domestically rather than relying on overseas data centers.

The announcement was made at the Cloud & AI Innovation Summit in Jakarta, where prominent figures such as Mike Chan, head of Azure AI Apps & Agents in Asia, and Dharma Simorangkir, President Director of Microsoft Indonesia, emphasized the importance of leveraging local capacity effectively to fuel innovation.

Transition from Adoption to AI-Driven Innovation

Indonesian enterprises are increasingly moving from preliminary AI experimentation to creating bespoke AI applications tailored to their operational challenges. Microsoft refers to these progressive companies as Frontier Firms, which integrate AI as a fundamental aspect of their workflow to enhance customer service, streamline internal processes, and modernize legacy systems.

To support these ambitions, the Indonesia Central cloud now offers a comprehensive suite of Azure services, including tools for developing data-connected applications, managing structured data, and deploying AI-ready virtual machines capable of handling complex AI computations locally.

Additionally, Microsoft 365 Copilot is now available in the region, providing AI-enhanced capabilities for common productivity tools, while developers benefit from GitHub Copilot, which accelerates coding through intelligent suggestions. This integrated suite aims to help organizations transition from pilot projects to large-scale, cost-effective AI implementations.

Early Adoption Across Key Sectors

Since the region’s launch in May 2025, there has been steady uptake among companies in sectors such as mining, travel, and digital services. Notable users include Petrosea and Vale Indonesia, which utilize the infrastructure for technical upgrades and secure data storage.

Digital-native companies like tiket.com have also embraced AI innovation by creating AI-powered travel assistants with Azure OpenAI Service, enabling customers to interact naturally with the platform for services ranging from flight updates to post-booking modifications.

Unified Data Management with Microsoft Fabric

A central focus of the summit was the critical need for organized data management to enable scalable AI adoption. Microsoft introduced Microsoft Fabric to the Indonesian market—a unified platform that integrates data engineering, warehousing, analytics, and business intelligence with embedded Copilot features to streamline data preparation and insight generation.

Fabric addresses the challenge of fragmented data sources by consolidating them into a single environment, enhancing governance, accelerating reporting, and optimizing costs without requiring organizations to build their own data foundations.

Empowering the Workforce with AI Skills

Beyond infrastructure, Microsoft underscored its commitment to workforce development through the Microsoft Elevate program, now in its second year. With over 1.2 million learners engaged, the program targets certification of 500,000 individuals in AI competencies by 2026, emphasizing practical, hands-on application of AI tools.

The training encompasses diverse groups, including educators, nonprofit professionals, community leaders, and digital skill seekers, utilizing resources such as Microsoft Copilot, Learning Accelerator, and Minecraft Education to demonstrate AI’s practical benefits.

Dharma Simorangkir reiterated the critical role of cloud and AI as foundational elements of national competitiveness, emphasizing that infrastructure investments must be matched with skill development.

A Vision for Sustainable AI Growth

Microsoft’s efforts in Indonesia form part of a broader $1.7 billion investment spanning 2024 to 2028, covering infrastructure, partner ecosystems, and talent cultivation. The company is also set to host GitHub Universe Jakarta in December 2025, fostering collaboration among developers, startups, and researchers.

Indonesia aims to become a regional hub for secure and inclusive AI development. With expanded cloud capabilities, enhanced AI tools, and ongoing workforce training programs, the country is laying the groundwork for sustained digital transformation and innovation.
