The journey to Lightfield began with Tome’s success as an AI-powered presentation tool. Despite its popularity and user base, the founders recognized the limitations of building a sustainable and differentiated product solely focused on presentations.

“Tome was the first generative AI-based presentation platform and was visually delightful and easy to use,” said Keith Peiris, Lightfield’s co-founder and CEO. “However, we realized that to facilitate meaningful communication, deeper context was essential—context that resides primarily in sales and customer-facing interactions.”

This insight led the team to pivot towards a vertical solution tailored for go-to-market teams, focusing on sales processes where understanding relationships and ongoing conversations is critical. The company trimmed its team to a core engineering group and spent a year developing Lightfield in stealth mode.

Unlike traditional CRMs such as Salesforce and HubSpot, which require users to input data into predefined fields and schemas, Lightfield captures the full, unstructured record of customer conversations and activities. This means recording and transcribing sales calls, ingesting emails, monitoring product usage, and constructing a comprehensive “relationship timeline” that chronicles every interaction with a customer.

AI models then extract structured insights from this raw data on demand, enabling companies to adapt and reorganize their data models without tedious manual adjustments. “You’re not locked into early decisions made when you didn’t fully understand your sales process,” Peiris explained.

Tyler Postle, co-founder of Voker.ai, shared how Lightfield’s AI agent helped him reactivate over 40 dormant deals in just two hours—opportunities neglected for six months while using HubSpot.

Postle noted that his response times improved drastically, from weeks or months to one or two days, a change that did not go unnoticed by clients. Similarly, Radu Spineanu of Humble Ops emphasized the platform’s ability to prevent deal loss due to neglect by automatically identifying and prompting follow-ups on stalled conversations.

Spineanu evaluated other modern CRMs like Attio and Clay but found them less fitting for early-stage companies lacking dedicated operations teams. He described Salesforce and HubSpot as “built for a different era,” requiring resources many startups simply don’t have.

Y Combinator Startups Favor AI-Native CRM Over Legacy Systems

Peiris observed a trend among Y Combinator startups rejecting traditional CRM solutions. “Most YC startups are not using Salesforce or HubSpot because they’re costly, complex, and don’t justify their investment at an early stage,” he said.

Many startups still rely on spreadsheets before adopting their first CRM. Lightfield aims to replace this intermediate step by offering an AI-native alternative that aligns better with the needs of fast-growing startups. While Salesforce and HubSpot have introduced AI features like conversation intelligence and automated data entry, Lightfield’s founders argue that fundamental architectural differences create a competitive moat. Peiris highlighted that unlike tools such as Gong and Revenue.io, which provide conversation analysis layered on top of Salesforce, Lightfield unifies communication, product analytics, and CRM data in a single platform, enhancing the quality of AI-generated insights and follow-ups.

Lightfield acknowledges the risks associated with storing complete conversation histories and relying on large language models. The company follows standard call recording protocols with visible notifications and maintains compliance efforts, including SOC 2 Type I certification and pursuing SOC 2 Type II and HIPAA compliance.

Peiris emphasized that customer data is never used to train AI models, and the system requires human approval before sending messages or updating critical information to mitigate risks of AI errors or hallucinations. This cautious approach positions Lightfield as a tool that amplifies human judgment rather than fully automating decision-making.

Consolidating Sales Tools into One AI-Powered Platform

Lightfield’s pricing and business model reflect a vision of replacing multiple specialized sales tools with a single integrated platform. Instead of charging per-seat fees for various point solutions, it offers a unified system covering sales engagement, conversation intelligence, meeting assistance, and CRM functionalities.
