Pragad emphasizes, “When misinformation spreads easily and AI-generated text is harder to distinguish from verified reporting, trust becomes infrastructure.” Editorial credibility is cumulative and fragile—once lost, it is difficult to regain.

Instead of resisting AI, Pragad advocates for structured collaboration between news organizations and technology platforms. This includes establishing clear attribution standards and fair compensation when journalistic content is used to train or inform AI systems. “Journalism underpins the quality of AI outputs. If reporting weakens, AI degrades with it,” he warns.

Since assuming leadership in 2018, Pragad has guided Newsweek through an expansion into digital formats, global platforms, and diversified revenue streams. Recognizing that legacy distribution models would not endure, his focus remains on preserving journalism’s societal role rather than clinging to outdated systems.

Pragad believes the publishers best equipped for the AI era will prioritize editorial identity and adaptability over sheer scale. “This is not a moment for nostalgia, it’s a moment for redesign,” he says. As AI continues to reshape information access, journalism’s lasting value lies in its capacity to explain complex issues and hold power accountable, regardless of the delivery platform.
