AI Integration Enhances Code Review to Mitigate Risks
Datadog, a leader in infrastructure observability, has introduced AI into its code review workflows to help engineering teams detect complex systemic risks that traditional human reviews might miss. Managing distributed systems requires balancing rapid deployment with operational stability, a challenge Datadog addresses by adopting advanced AI tools.
Limitations of Traditional Static Analysis Tools
While enterprises have long used automated static analysis tools to support code reviews, these often detect only basic syntax or style issues without understanding the broader system context. Early AI code review tools acted like sophisticated linters but failed to grasp how changes might impact interconnected services, leading to many flagged suggestions being ignored.
Datadog aimed for a solution that could reason about the entire codebase and its dependencies, rather than simply scanning for isolated errors.
Deploying OpenAI’s Codex for Smarter Reviews
The AI Development Experience (AI DevX) team at Datadog integrated OpenAI’s Codex directly into the code review process for one of their busiest repositories. This AI system automatically reviews every pull request by comparing the developer’s intent with the actual code and running tests to validate behavior.
Validating AI Effectiveness Through Incident Replay
To demonstrate the practical value of this AI integration beyond theoretical productivity gains, Datadog created an “incident replay harness.” They replayed historical pull requests known to have caused outages and tested whether the AI would have flagged the problematic changes missed by human reviewers.
The AI agent successfully identified approximately 22% of the incidents reviewed, highlighting risks invisible to engineers at the time and providing compelling evidence of its ability to prevent future errors.
Transforming Engineering Culture With AI Assistance
With the AI tool deployed to over 1,000 engineers, Datadog observed a shift in how code reviews are approached. Rather than replacing human judgment, the AI acts as an intelligent partner that reduces cognitive load by detecting subtle cross-service interactions and missing test coverage that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Brad Carter, head of the AI DevX team, described the AI feedback as “like the smartest engineer with infinite time to find bugs,” capable of seeing complex code connections beyond human capacity.
From Bug Detection to Building Reliability
Datadog’s experience underscores a broader evolution in code review philosophy—from simple error detection to a foundational reliability mechanism. By surfacing risks beyond individual context, the AI tool helps scale developer confidence and aligns with Datadog’s commitment to operational stability.
“We are the platform companies rely on when everything else is breaking,” said Carter. “Preventing incidents strengthens the trust our customers place in us.” This integration highlights AI’s potential as a critical enabler of quality assurance and risk mitigation in enterprise software development.
