AIG Leverages Generative AI to Transform Insurance Workflows
American International Group (AIG), a leading global insurance provider, has announced accelerated benefits from integrating generative artificial intelligence into its core operations. The company revealed at its recent Investor Day that AI-driven enhancements are delivering measurable gains in underwriting capacity, operational efficiency, and portfolio integration, signaling a transformative shift in insurance workflows.
From Aspirations to Tangible Results
Initially describing its AI ambitions as “aspirational,” AIG’s CEO Peter Zaffino reported during a fourth-quarter earnings call that the actual capabilities have surpassed early expectations. He emphasized a “massive change” in processing submission flows without requiring additional human resources, marking a significant operational breakthrough.
Embedding AI Across Commercial Lines
AIG has embedded generative AI tools, notably its proprietary platform AIG Assist, across most commercial insurance lines. This integration aims to streamline underwriting and claims management, with the company targeting half a million submissions by 2030 through its Lexington Insurance unit. Already, Lexington has processed over 370,000 submissions in 2025 alone, showcasing the accelerated throughput enabled by AI technologies.
Orchestration Layer Enhances AI Agent Collaboration
Central to AIG’s AI strategy is the development of an orchestration layer that coordinates multiple AI agents. These agents act as collaborative companions to human teams, providing real-time insights, referencing historical case data, and critically evaluating underwriting decisions. This orchestration enables rapid data management and unbiased analysis throughout the entire workflow, compressing front-to-back processes ranging from intake to risk evaluation and claims handling.
Practical Applications and Portfolio Integration
In real-world applications, AIG leveraged its AI stack during the acquisition of Everest’s retail commercial business. By creating a combined ontology of both portfolios, the company efficiently prioritized account renewals in a fraction of the usual time, demonstrating the power of AI in complex portfolio blending. Additionally, AIG partnered with Amwins, Blackstone, and Palantir to launch Lloyd’s Syndicate 2479, using large language models to ensure alignment between portfolio risk and syndicate appetite, with a promising pipeline for similar special purpose vehicle opportunities.
Implications for the Insurance Industry
AIG’s deployment of agentic AI with an orchestration layer exemplifies how generative models can be deeply integrated into core business processes to drive economic value. The company’s experience underscores the importance of AI-driven workflow redesign, measurable capacity gains, and cycle time reduction—key factors that AI decision-makers in insurance and beyond should consider when planning their digital transformations.
